That First Breath.
I’d just finished a breathwork class I really needed. For a change, I wasn’t leading, just showing up as a participant. You know that slow, fuzzy moment after class when everyone’s gathering their things, not quite ready to go back to real life? That’s where I was, sitting on the bench, when I turned to the woman next to me and asked, “How was class for you?”
She paused. It was a long beat, almost like she was letting the rest of her catch up. “It was my first time,” she said. And then everything started spilling out. She told me her whole body felt numb, that she could feel these vibrations moving through her. She didn’t expect any of it, and she admitted she couldn’t totally wrap her head around what had happened, but she was sure it meant something.
You could see it all over her face. She looked surprised and curious. Like she’d found something she had no idea she was even looking for.
So I tried to make it simple for her and said, “You just showed yourself what’s possible. And the cool part? Your breath is always with you.”
She smiled and paused, and I could tell that really landed for her. Something had already shifted. Before we left, she introduced herself and said she couldn’t wait to come back and do it all over again.
That’s what sticks with me. Not the particular breathwork technique. Not even the class or whatever peace I hoped to find in that session. It’s that moment when something clicks for somebody.
When breathwork isn’t just some thing you’ve heard about, but it turns into something you actually experience.
You can use it sitting in your car. Right before a tough meeting. Honestly, even when your kid’s having a meltdown (been there!). Or just when you need to come back to yourself for a minute. That’s how breathwork actually spreads. Not because you’ve nailed the routine or can recite the science, but because of these little moments.
It’s just one person realizing, “Oh… I can do this too.” And then they take that with them. Maybe, without meaning to, they end up passing it on.
